A coastguard icebreaker and a ship owned by a conservation group collided today as tensions mounted over the annual Canadian seal hunt.

A spokesman for Canada’s Fisheries Department said that the icebreaker was “grazed” twice by the Farley Mowat, a 177ft vessel owned by the US-based Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.
