A suicide bomber blew himself up in a housing compound in southern Afghanistan today, killing a policeman and wounding eight other people, including two children, a provincial police chief said.

A suicide bomber blew himself up in a housing compound in southern Afghanistan today, killing a policeman and wounding eight other people, including two children, a provincial police chief said.

The bomber, with explosives vest strapped to his body, tried to enter the house of a regional police commander in the town of Lashkar Gah, in Helmand province, said the provincial police chief Mohammad Hussain Andiwal.
