Builders uncover WWII bodies in Montenegro

Forensic experts have exhumed the remains of dozens of German soldiers buried during the Second World War in Montenegro’s capital Podgorica, officials said today.

The remains were discovered at a construction site.

“So far we have found 90 out of 476 German soldiers’ remains believed buried in this area during the Nazi occupation,” chief German expert Johann Tieber said.

He said that most of the soldiers were killed in battles with Montenegrin partisans led by Yugoslav communist leader Josip Broz Tito during the 1941-1945 war.

Montenegrin forensic expert Dejan Popovic said that the remains were identified as German soldiers by metal identity tags found among pieces of bones, combs and pocket mirrors.

He said that the bodies were buried in an area that was once Podgorica’s airport.

The remains are to be reburied in a Roman Catholic chapel in the village of Sukuruc, about 10 miles from Podgorica.
