Suicide car bomber hits coalition convoy in Kabul

A suicide car bomber blew himself up near a convoy of US-led coalition troops on the outskirts of Kabul today, leaving up to seven civilians and three soldiers wounded, Afghan officials said.

The bomber targeted the convoy outside Camp Phoenix, a US base on Kabul’s Jalalabad road, and some foreign troops were also wounded in the blast, said Zemerai Bashary, spokesman for the Interior Ministry.

A statement from the US-led coalition said three Afghan civilians and three coalition service members were wounded.

Lt. Cmdr Brenda Steele, a spokeswoman for Nato forces, said one foreign soldier suffered minor injuries in the attack. She would not disclose the nationality of the wounded soldier.

Seven civilians were also wounded in the attack, Steele said.

The differing casualty figures could not be reconciled.
