Euro chiefs launch 'EU Tube'

The European Commission is out to improve the EU’s profile by joining the YouTube revolution.

A dedicated “EU Tube” channel on the vastly-popular video-sharing website is aimed at attracting some of the 100 million “hits” YouTube generates every day.

How many of the YouTube generation will want EU information as they browse everything from videos of wannabe rock stars to wedding home movie clips is unclear, but the Commission’s public image chief thinks it is worth a try.

Communications Strategy Commissioner Margot Wallstrom said: “This initiative reflects the Commission’s commitment to better explain its policies and actions on issues which concern citizens across the EU, such as climate change, energy and immigration.”

EU Tube launched today with about 50 video clips covering everything from the EU’s creation half a century ago to how it safeguards the environment.

Most of the material is in English, but French and German language videos will also be used, with other languages being added where possible to reflect the 27 member states.

“It is important for the Commission to use all the means at its disposal when it comes to communicating with European citizens,” said Ms Wallstrom.

“We cannot ignore the developments which have taken place on the internet in the past few years, in particular the popularity of video-sharing sites such as YouTube.”
