'Investigator' quizzed over missing Madeleine
A Spanish “investigator” was interviewed about the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, Portuguese police confirmed today.
A spokesman said Antonio Tocscano was questioned by police for two hours yesterday but added that they were “cautious” about treating the information as a new lead.
Mr Tocscano previously told the media he believed a man involved in a Europe-wide paedophile ring, known as The Frenchman, was linked to Madeleine’s disappearance.
He also claimed The Frenchman was overheard saying he was travelling to the Algarve before the four-year-old went missing.
Police confirmed Mr Tocscano – who describes himself as an “investigator” but does not work for the police – originally contacted them several weeks ago but gave few details.
A spokeswoman for the McCann family would not comment on Mr Tocscano’s claims but added that Madeleine’s parents were urging anyone with information to come forward.
She said: “If anybody has any information at all they should go straight to the police.
“The smallest bit of information could be vital. People across Europe should call the international Crimestoppers line on 0044 188 373 1336 or if they are inside the UK 0800 555 111.”
It is now 56 days since Madeleine, from Rothley, Leicestershire, went missing from her hotel room in the Portuguese resort Praia da Luz while her parents, Gerry and Kate, were eating in a restaurant just 100 yards away.
