Nurse confesses to killing patients in Germany
A nurse confessed to killing four critically ill patients in the cardiology ward of a Berlin hospital as her murder trial began today, and said she regretted her actions.
The 54-year-old woman, identified only as Irene B., is charged with six counts of murder for allegedly killing patients in Berlin’s Charite Hospital with an overdose of medication between June 2005 and October 2006.
She also faces two counts of attempted murder.
In a statement read out to the court, she confessed to four of the killings, but disputed the others.
“I regret that I intervened to seal the fate of these people,” she said.
“I know that it was a crime that I will have to pay for.”
The woman was arrested in October, after the hospital alerted prosecutors amid suspicion she was responsible for the deaths of two male patients.
Fifteen patients died under her care.
If convicted by the Berlin State Court, the woman could face a sentence of life in prison.
