British tourist killed in Egypt crash

One British tourist was killed and another injured today in a car crash near an Egyptian Sinai Peninsula resort, police in the area said.

The 50-year-old Briton and his wife were heading from Sharm el-Sheikh to Dahab when their car overturned, a police official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not allowed to talk to the media.

The man was killed, and his wife was injured and taken to a Sharm el-Sheikh hospital for treatment, the official said.

In a separate accident, four Russian tourists were injured when their car crashed outside of the Sinai resort of Nuweiba, the official said. Their conditions were unknown.

Road accidents are very common in Egypt because of bad roads and poor enforcement of traffic laws. Police estimate road accidents kill about 6,000 people annually.
