South African President Thabo Mbeki was due to give his State of the Nation address today, under pressure to give a firm declaration that is government is serious about tackling crime.

Mbeki traditionally uses his speech at the opening parliament to address a broad range of issues, primarily the need to tackle the legacy of apartheid and ease poverty and deprivation.
