Mummified baby found in Florida storage unit

A partially mummified baby was found wrapped in newspaper in a self-storage unit in Florida and is believed to have been born sometime in the 1950s, US authorities said.

The remains were found yesterday in 1950s-era papers inside a suitcase contained inside a second suitcase.

The storage unit had been rented by a couple in 1996, but the man died several years ago and the woman died in the past year, said Officer Jeff Messer, a police spokesman.

“We’re not giving out any names yet because we’re finding more than one or two people had access to their warehouse,” Messer said today.

Investigators believe it is a “very safe bet” the baby was born as early as the 1950s, but details remain murky until an autopsy is completed later today, Messer said.

The body was found by the couple’s daughter, who had been told the contents of the storage unit would be auctioned off because the rent had not been paid, police said.
