70 feared dead as Sri Lankan navy sinks 11 rebel ships

Sri Lanka’s navy sank 11 Tamil Tiger rebel ships loaded with troops and weapons early today during a five-hour sea battle off the country’s east coast, killing about 70 separatists.

It was one of the largest reported clashes in Sri Lanka’s conflict since weeks of fighting in August left hundreds dead.
