Authorities today worked to disarm a Second World War bomb in the Berlin suburb of Potsdam, evacuating 12,000 people and closing the local train station.

The bomb, dropped by a British bomber, was found during construction work near the train station yesterday, and police cleared the area this morning while bomb disposal experts worked to render the device harmless.

Authorities opened the city hall to take in people who had been temporarily forced out of their homes.

The discovery of Second World War bombs is relatively common in Germany.
