London: Man shot in anti-terror raid
A man was shot by British police this morning in an anti-terrorist raid.
Officers wearing protective clothing moved into the residential address in Lansdown Road, Forest Gate, east London, and cordons were put in place.
British Home Secretary John Reid has been kept informed of developments since the pre-planned police operation began at 4am.
The man who was shot was taken to a nearby hospital.
A 23-year-old man was arrested at the scene and is in custody at a police station in central London.
The decision to launch the raid followed discussions between MI5, the anti-terrorist branch and the UK Health Protection Agency.
A Metropolitain Police spokesman said its officers at the scene were wearing protective clothing as a “precautionary measure”.
The spokesman said: “Public safety is a priority and at this stage there is nothing to suggest members of the public in the immediate area are at risk. If we believe there is a potential risk, appropriate action will be taken and advice issued.”
The raid is not linked to events in London last July, the spokesman said.
