Tonbridge suspect freed on bail

A 28-year-old man arrested in connection with Britain’s biggest cash robbery has been released on bail, police said tonight.

He was detained in the Bexley area of south east London on Saturday by officers investigating the £53m (€77.24m) Securitas depot raid in Tonbridge, Kent.

Earlier today several officers stood guard outside a semi-detached property in a quiet, residential Bexley street as forensic officers scoured the top floor flat.

The occupants were said by neighbours to be a man, believed to be a mechanic, his partner, and their 18-month-old son.

Police also focused their attention on two domestic garages, one next door to the property and another – one of a block of ten – several hundred metres away.

Forensic officers poured over a green W-reg Citroen Saxo kept in the latter and removed a blue quad bike.

Jacqueline Wall, a civilian Metropolitan Police employee based at Scotland Yard who lives next door to the two-bedroom flat, said officers swooped yesterday afternoon.

A van, three police cars and two unmarked police cars, along with 15 to 20 officers, arrived on the scene at about 3pm, she claimed.

The 44-year-old said she had previously observed “a lot of comings and goings” at the address, which she believed had recently been sold.

She added: “They never spoke to anyone round here if they didn’t have to. They kept themselves to themselves.”
