Indian police clash with Muslim worshippers over cartoons

Indian police today used batons and tear gas to disperse angry Muslim worshippers who rioted in the city to protest against the publication of cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed.

Several thousand people burned Danish flags, pelted police with stones, and looted shops after Friday prayers in Hyderabad, a city of seven million people, nearly half of them Muslim.

Two people were arrested for inciting violence, police said. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

The cartoons, which first appeared in a Danish newspaper in September, have caused widespread anger across the Muslim world.
