Strong quake shakes Tokyo, no tsunami warning issued
A magnitude 5.1 earthquake shook central Japan today, but there was no danger of a tsunami, the Meteorological Agency said.
The quake was centred about 68 miles) below ground in north-western Chiba prefecture (state) just west of Tokyo, according to the agency.
It was powerful enough to sway buildings in Tokyo, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damages.
Public broadcaster NHK said local train services in Kanagawa prefecture, just east of Tokyo, were temporarily halted for safety checks, but bullet train services linking the capital and other parts of Japan were not affected.
Japan sits on four tectonic plates and is one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries.
