Thirty injured in Spanish subway train collision

A collision involving three subway trains in the eastern Spanish city of Valencia injured at least 30 people, four of them seriously, authorities said today.

One driver and three other people were reported to be in serious condition, while others were treated for lesser, unspecified injuries, said Miguel Peralta, regional councillor of the Valencia region.

The trains collided on the No. 1 line of the Valencia subway, three miles southeast of the city. Services were interrupted after the accident.

Peralta said that one of the trains had been at a standstill on the tracks.

The second train used its emergency brakes to avoid a collision, but it was in turn hit by a third train and partially derailed.

The driver’s cab at the front of the train that smashed into the others and the one on the rear of the train that was hit were totally destroyed, Peralta said.
