Search on for climbers lost in glacial crevasse
Three mountain rescue teams renewed a search today for two Polish climbers believed to have fallen down a crevasse on a glacier in Russia’s Caucasus Mountains.
The search suffered a setback when rescuers did not find the missing pair in a spot where two other Polish climbers reported they had fallen into a crevasse, said Kantemir Davydov, a spokesman for the Emergency Situations Ministry branch in the Kabardino-Balkariya region.
He said three teams of 15 expert rescuers were searching today near the 18,510-foot Mt. Elbrus, but that cloudy weather meant helicopters could not be used.
The ministry has identified the climbers as Marta Rugalska, 28, of Warsaw, and Miroslaw Solitsky, 30, of Sokolow Podlaski.
