Moderate earthquake reported in Turkey
A moderate earthquake shook the area near Turkey’s border with Iran today, seismologists said.
There were no immediate reports of any damage or injuries.
The magnitude-4.6 quake struck Hakkari province at 6.45am local time (4.45am Irish time), according to the Kandilli Observatory, based in Istanbul.
Reports said that residents rushed outside following the tremor, but there was no indication of any damage or injuries, according to Deputy Governor Sezgin Ucuncu.
Quakes are frequent in Turkey, much of which lies atop the active North Anatolian fault.
Two devastating earthquakes killed about 18,000 people in north-western Turkey in 1999.
