French President Jacques Chirac has appointed interior minister Dominique de Villepin as the country's new prime minister, after he accepted the resignation of Jean-Pierre Raffarin.

French President Jacques Chirac has appointed interior minister Dominique de Villepin as the country's new prime minister, after he accepted the resignation of Jean-Pierre Raffarin.

The resignation came two days after French voters dealt the government a punishing blow by rejecting the European Union’s proposed constitution.
