A 16-year-old boy who collapsed and later died after scoring in a six-a-side football match was nmed by police today.

Matthew Hill, of Mexborough, South Yorkshire, was playing for the St James’ football team at the Dearne Valley Leisure Centre when the incident happened on Thursday evening.

South Yorkshire police said two coaches were present at the time and staff gave first aid but Matthew died later at Doncaster Royal infirmary.

A spokeswoman said: “Matthew, who had played for the team for about four years, collapsed shortly after scoring a goal in a six-a-side match while he was walking back to the centre line, shortly before 7pm on Thursday.

“Staff at the leisure centre gave him first aid treatment and he was taken to Doncaster Royal Infirmary where he later died.

“His parents were with him at the hospital.”

A post-mortem examination has proved inconclusive but officers are satisfied there were no suspicious circumstances.

The spokeswoman said Matthew’s parents were “devastated” by his death and have asked to be left alone to grieve.
