England fan 'stabbed to death by pickpocket'
An England fan was stabbed to death today during celebrations after the Euro 2004 victory over Croatia.
Stephen Smith, 28, from Wolverhampton, was stabbed in the heart in Lisbon, according to sources in Portugal.
Ukrainian pickpocket Vadym Abramov, 31, was arrested and was appearing in court today.
The tragedy happened in the Rua Augusta, just off the Portuguese capital’s main Rossio Square, at 3.30am.
Portuguese police said the stabbing was not football-related and urged England fans to continue their peaceful mood of recent days.
