Two newsmen shot dead in Iraq

Gunmen shot dead a Polish and an Algerian journalist in a drive-by shooting south of Baghdad today.

A second Pole was wounded in the shooting in Mahmoudiyah, about 20 miles south of Baghdad, said police Lieutenant Alaa Hussein.

Hussein said the journalists worked for a Polish television station but had no additional information.

In Warsaw, Andrej Siwek, spokesman for Poland’s TVP, said he could not confirm that the network’s employees had been killed but “everything indicates that this unfortunately might be true”.
