Extra security at Old Trafford

Manchester United have instigated extra security checks for tonight’s Premiership encounter with Charlton at Old Trafford in light of speculation surrounding a planned terrorist atrocity.

United insist they were not aware of any impending threat despite newspaper reports today that suggested the 10 people arrested in police raids yesterday all had tickets for Saturday’s game with Liverpool, raising the possibility of mass suicide bombings.

As part of their normal security procedures ahead of any first-team game, United have consulted with Greater Manchester Police, who have advised them that both tonight’s clash and the one with Liverpool should go ahead as planned.

However, United have decided to carry out increased number of searches and are warning all supporters to get to the ground as early as possible as there will inevitably be delays, although the match is still scheduled to kick-off at 8pm.

“Supporters are requested not to bring bags to the match and arrive in good time to take their seats,” said a club statement.

“We would also encourage all supporters to be particularly vigilant at this time and report anything regarded as suspicious to ground officials.”
