Opposition invited to Burma democracy talks

Burma’s military government today formally invited Aung San Suu Kyi’s pro-democracy party to attend next month’s constitution-drafting National Convention.

However, it was not clear if Nobel Peace Prize winner Suu Kyi, the detained leader of the National League for Democracy, was personally invited.

She is under house arrest at her residence in the capital Rangoon and cannot be contacted by outsiders or fellow party leaders.

The military junta announced last month it was taking the first step on a self-proclaimed “road map to democracy” by reconvening a constitutional convention that was suspended eight years ago. The plan is supposed to eventually lead to a general election and a new government.

The NLD said earlier it would not consider attending the National Convention unless Suu Kyi was freed.
