Sir Michael Atiyah, regarded as one of the finest mathematicians of the last century, today shared the Norwegian Abel Prize with American Isadore Singer.

The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters awarded the €713,600 prize to them “for their discovery and proof of the index theorem, bringing together topology, geometry and analysis, and their outstanding role in building new bridges between mathematics and theoretical physics.”
