100 evacuated from 'sinking' ferry

More than 100 people were evacuated from a ferry after it collided with a freighter and was in danger of sinking off the southwestern Swedish coast early today.

“The Stena Nautica is taking on water and there is a risk it will sink,” Sea Rescue spokesman Oerjan Wennersten said.

“All 91 passengers and 28 of the 37 crew have been evacuated to a tug.”

Nine crew remained onboard to help repair the ferry and tow it to port, he said.

There were no injuries in the accident, in the Kattegat between Sweden and Denmark, officials said.

It was not immediately clear what caused the collision between Stena Nautica and the smaller Jamaica-flagged vessel, which was able to reach port. The weather was calm but some fog was reported in the area.

No further details were immediately available.
