Thousands set off on anti-Bush protest

Thousands of anti-war protesters from across the country set off in central London today on a march and mass rally.

Tens of thousands are expected to turn out to voice their anger at US President George Bush’s state visit to Britain.

Armed with posters, banners and drums, they crowded into Malet Street in Bloomsbury to make a symbolic march past Parliament and along Whitehall.

Demonstrators from Bradford, Chester and Bristol were just some of the areas represented on today's protest.

Foghorns blared and whistles were blown as the crowd chanted anti-war slogans.

The atmosphere at the beginning of the march was light-hearted, with many singing and dancing down the street.

More than 5,000 police officers were on duty in the capital to ensure the march runs smoothly.
