Four killed as casino car park collapses
The top five storeys of a casino car park in America’s Atlantic County collapsed today, killing four people.
The car park, which is still under construction, sent concrete slabs and metal beams crashing down as workers ran for cover. One person was still missing in the rubble, officials said.
Three of the victims were found dead inside the building and the other died in hospital, said Michael Shurman, deputy director of emergency management for Atlantic County.
About 20 people were taken to nearby hospitals.
The garage is part of an expansion project at the Tropicana Casino and Resort.
The 2,400-space, 10-storey car park flanks an 18-storey hotel tower, also still under construction.
The end of the building opposite the tower collapsed, leaving five layers of concrete and steel sloping downward at a steep angle.
The Tropicana expansion project was scheduled for completion next March.
Named “The Quarter,” the project is intended to diversify the casino’s offerings with other forms of entertainment besides gambling.
Tenants expected to move in include a magic shop, an IMAX theatre, a Latin-themed nightclub and eight restaurants.
