Weapons-grade uranium found in Iran

The UN atomic watchdog agency has found additional traces of weapons-grade highly enriched uranium in Iran, diplomats said in Vienna today.

Readings were registered by inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency looking for evidence of a possible nuclear weapons programme.

The diplomats said the minute quantities of the substance were found at the Kalaye Electric Co. Earlier this year, U.N. inspectors found enriched uranium particles at Iran’s uranium-enrichment plant at Natanz.

The agency’s board of governors earlier this month set an October deadline for Iran to essentially disprove that it is trying to make nuclear weapons. Tehran says its nuclear programs are peaceful.

If Iran is found to be violating the treaty banning the spread of nuclear weapons, the Security Council could order economic and political sanctions.
