More than 100 perish in road crash inferno

More than 100 people were killed when three buses and a lorry collided and burst into flames in central Nigeria today.

State television showed charred remains of some victims of the accident, which happened shortly after midnight about 60 miles outside the capital, Abuja.

Circumstances of the accident were unclear. Authorities said the buses had been carrying passengers on long-distance journeys. One was carrying 70 passengers.

Samuel Adetoye, police commissioner of Kogi state, where the accident happened, asked families who had relatives travelling in the area to visit hospital mortuaries to try to identify the dead.

Authorities had yet to determine an exact death toll.

A mass burial was planned tomorrow for the victims who went unclaimed, Adetoye said.

Nigeria has chaotic roadways that see frequent accidents with high death tolls.
