A 13-year-old girl was found hanging in her bedroom following her first day back at school after the summer holidays.

The girl, whose name has not been released, was discovered by a family member just before midnight on Tuesday at her home in Purton, near Swindon, Wiltshire, UK.

British police and ambulance crews went to the house but the girl was pronounced dead on arrival at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon.

The girl was a Year Nine pupil at Bradon Forest School, a 1,182-pupil foundation school in Purton.

Her headteacher, Lee Spiers, said she was "a popular girl with a wide circle of friends". It was not thought she was a victim of bullying.

Wiltshire Police said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the girl's death.

A force spokesman said officers did not believe her death was related to family problems or that she was a victim of bullying.

Mr Spiers said the 13-year-old was a "lovely girl" and said measures had been put in place to help her friends and classmates cope with her death.

A spokesman for Wiltshire Police said the force would not be releasing the girl's name or any further details about her death.

It is thought an inquest into the girl's death will be opened at Swindon Coroner's Court on Monday.
