Indonesian train and minibus smash kills 15

At least 15 people were killed in Indonesia today when a passenger train slammed into a minibus carrying wedding guests, officials said.

Eight others were injured in the accident at a crossing near the central Javanese town of Sragen, said a local railway official.

No train passengers were killed in the accident, the latest in a series of bloody crashes on Indonesia’s underfunded rail network, he said.

Police were questioning the guard on duty at the crossing, state news agency Antara reported. The cause of the accident was not immediately known.

Those killed were on their way to a wedding when the accident occurred, the report said.

Sragen is around 280 miles east of the capital Jakarta.

Fatal crashes are common on railways. Carriages are often over crowded and signal systems often break down. Last December, five people were killed when a train derailed on Java island.
