Spring snow blankets the US

A huge snowstorm took a bite out of spring across the US today, burying emerging flower buds, cancelling baseball games and snarling the morning rush hour.

Up to a foot of wet, heavy snow had buried parts of Nebraska in the Midwest and six inches of snow was possible in the New York City area.

“I thought we were supposed to have April showers. What happened to that?” said Randy Krominga at Northwood, Iowa, where up to six inches had fallen.

Cold air from the north collided with wet, stormy weather flowing up from the south to produce the freezing rain and snow, the National Weather Service said.

“Snow is not uncommon for April, but these amounts are uncommon,” said Miles Schumacher, a weather service meteorologist in Des Moines.
