Kenyan presidential candidate injured in crash
Two people were killed today in a car crash involving Mwai Kibaki, Kenya’s main opposition candidate in this month’s presidential election.
The 4X4 vehicle in which Kibaki was riding collided with a minibus on the Nairobi-Mombasa road as he was returning to the capital from a rally.
Kibaki fractured his right arm and dislocated his right ankle but doctors said he has not suffered any major injuries to the head or chest.
Kibaki, who served as vice president for 10 years under outgoing President Daniel arap Moi, is running against Moi’s hand-picked candidate, Uhuru Kenyatta, the 41-year-old son of Kenya’s first president.
Moi, 78, who has been president for 24 years, is constitutionally obliged to step down after his present term.
