Nine drown after walkway collapses

Eight schoolchildren and one teacher drowned when a small wooden walkway collapsed in a tourism park in Argentina.

Another student was reported missing.

A group of schoolchildren - aged 12 to 13 - were taking a photo on the walkway when it collapsed into the cold fast-flowing Chubut river near the town of Trelew.

Survivors were taken to hospital, some of them were suffering from hypothermia.

School officials said that 50 students and 25 adult chaperones from Buenos Aires were on a three-day excursion to the area.

Witnesses said that a sign posted nearby warned that the walkway could support only three people.

Rescue workers continued to look for the missing children in and near the Chubut river.
