The tragedy happened during Victory Day celebrations marking the Allied victory over the Nazis.

About 150 people have been injured in the explosion, including children, veterans and members of a military band.

They were marching through the Caspian Sea port of Kaspiisk towards the town cemetery to lay wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

The blast came during Russian celebrations to mark Victory Day, one of the nation's most important holidays.

Mr Putin has convened an emergency meeting in the Kremlin and appointed the head of the Federal Security Service to oversee the investigation.
