International observers killed in West Bank shooting

Two international observers based in Hebron have been shot dead in an ambush in the West Bank.

Radio reports say the observers were driving on a bypass road used mostly by Jewish settlers when their car came under fire.

The Israeli military said two observers were killed and another lightly wounded when Palestinians opened fire on their car near Halhoul.

The unarmed observers are serving in the Temporary International Presence in Hebron set up in 1997 as part of an agreement dividing Hebron into Palestinian and Israeli-controlled zones.

They are the first members of the force to be killed.

A Norwegian official said one of the dead was from Turkey and the other from Switzerland.
