US indicts British man in connection with Pearl kidnapping

The United States has indicted a British-born Islamic militant in connection with the abduction and murder of US reporter Daniel Pearl.

Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh was indicted in connection with Pearl's kidnapping, and also for the kidnapping of an American tourist in India.

The announcement was made today by US Attorney General John Ashcroft. Sheikh Omar is currently in custody in Pakistan after allegedly confessing to organising the kidnapping of Mr Pearl, who worked for the Wall Street Journal.

The report disappeared on January 23rd while researching a story in the Pakistani city of Karachi.
