Hijack attempt on UA flight foiled

A hijack attempt on a United Airlines flight has been foiled.

A man has been detained after he attempted to enter the cockpit of a UA flight from San Francisco to Buenos Aires.

The man, identified as Pablo Moreira, 28, a Uruguay banker, was overpowered by crew members after an exchange of blows, an Argentine air force spokesman said.

He was taken into custody by Argentinian authorities at Buenos Aires Ezeiza International Airport, officials said.

United Airlines said it notified local authorities and the FBI, adding that flights to and from Buenos Aires would continue as scheduled.

The flight - Flight 855 - was carrying 142 passengers and 15 crew members.

The cockpit of the plane had a reinforced door, the FAA said.

Two of the four September 11 planes were United Airlines carriers.

Flight 175 crashed into the south tower of the World Trade Center in New York while flight 93 came down in Pennsylvania.
