Children threaten suicide in Australian refugee camp

Eleven children at a detention camp for refugees seeking asylum in Australia have vowed to commit suicide unless they are released.

The 11 are mostly orphaned Afghans aged between 14 and 17.

Some of them have been granted temporary Australian visas, but they are still waiting to be released from the Woomera detention camp.

Around 370 detainees at Woomera are on hunger strike at the moment in protest at the government’s refusal to speed up their asylum claims and move them out of the centre, a former missile testing base in the hot, dry Australian bush.

About 175 of them haven’t eaten in nearly two weeks.
