Turkish-born Swede charged with killing daughter
A Kurdish man has been detained in Sweden on charges he killed one of his daughters.
Father-of-six Rahmi Sahindal is alleged to have killed the girl because he was displeased with her lifestyle.
The 56-year-old, who became a Swedish citizen in 1999, is in police custody in Uppsala and faces a charge of murder.
Police say he shot dead his 26-year-old daughter, Fadime, while she was visiting her younger sister.
Her mother and two sisters also were at the apartment and had to be treated for shock.
If convicted, Sahindal could be sentenced to 10 years or life in prison.
The killing follows years of alleged threats and harassment by Sahindal against his daughter because she refused to return to Turkey for an arranged marriage with a Kurdish man.
Instead, she wanted to marry her Swedish boyfriend.
Rahmi Sahindal was fined and one of his sons was put under protective supervision in 1998 after a court found them guilty of harassing Fadime.
Her Swedish boyfriend died in a car accident three weeks after the trial. Fadime Sahindal testified at the time that she was convinced that neither her father nor her brother would hesitate to carry out a death threat if she did not agree to an arranged marriage.
