Former US Secretary of State dies

Former US Secretary of State Cyrus Vance, who served under the administration of President Jimmy Carter, has died. He was aged 84.

Former US Secretary of State Cyrus Vance, who served under the administration of President Jimmy Carter, has died. He was aged 84.

Mr Vance had suffered a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

He is most remembered for resigning from his position as Secretary of State after refusing to approve an ill-fated mission to save American hostages from Iran in 1980.

He was also involved in peacekeeping duties in Israel, Croatia, Bosnia and helped ease tensions with China.
