A man who allegedly stabbed a woman to death in a rush-hour Tube station is under "suicide watch" in hospital after stabbing himself.

Two men were also stabbed at Euston Underground station, in central London, after trying to intervene during the incident at about 6.20pm.

The alleged killer tried to slit his own throat and then stabbed himself in the chest, police said.

Police said the alleged assailant is fighting for his life after undergoing emergency surgery. He is also under a police "suicide watch".

The incident started when a man and a woman alighted from a northbound Northern Line train, British Transport Police said.

Spokesman Simon Lubin said the alleged assailant and the woman, both in their 20s or 30s, were believed to have been travelling together on the train.

"We think there was an argument. We believe they got off the train and he stabbed her."

The woman, believed to be an ex-girlfriend, was stabbed once or twice in the chest and died on the platform.

A man who tried to intervene was stabbed in the arm and received a serious injury.

The alleged attacker then went up the escalator to the booking hall level near the ticket barriers. Another man tried to intervene. He received a minor arm injury.
