George Crawford was discovered on the Friday before Christmas at the bungalow he shared with wife Brenda on the Kirkholt estate, in Rochdale, Greater Manchester.

He had been due to appear at Manchester Crown Court next month over allegations that he abused four children in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Mr Crawford, 64, who had no previous convictions for sex abuse, was expected to deny all charges.

A Greater Manchester Police spokeswoman said Martin Goldrick, 41, from the Rochdale area, was charged with murder this afternoon.

"He is due to appear at Rochdale Magistrates Court on Monday, December 31," she added.
