New York considers memorial to Ramones star

Joey Ramone is to be honoured by his hometown of New York.

A street corner in the East Village will be named Joey Ramone Place after the star, who died of cancer in April.

The honorary marker will be close to CBGB's club, where The Ramones played regularly in the mid-'70s.

The idea for the memorial plaque came from 20-year-old Ramones fan Maureen Wojciechowski.

Her idea was supported by a petition signed by local businesspeople and musicians.

A 50-member community board will consider the proposal on November 15.

Wojciechowski said: "The Ramones were just so much fun, and Joey was such an individual. He was true to New York City, and he was really cool."
