Japan to dispatch warships to assist war on terrorism
Japan is sending out three warships to provide support to the US-led war on terrorism.
The non-combat support comes despite opposition to any Japanese attempt to expand its military role.
Two destroyers and a supply vessel, will leave the southern port of Sasebo tomorrow.
They will head for the Indian Ocean to gather intelligence for the US-led forces in Afghanistan.
The move comes after parliament passed laws allowing Japan's military to transport supplies and provide other non-combat support to the US-led coalition.
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi is eager to show that Japan is doing more than just sending money to assist in the war in Afghanistan.
