Israeli tanks roll into Palestinian towns
Israeli tanks and troops have moved into Bethlehem in the West Bank.
The move comes after a Palestinian militia leader was killed in a bomb blast, blamed on Israel.
Atef Abayat, local leader of the Tanzim militia in Bethlehem, died along with two other members of the group in a car bomb attack yesterday.
Within an hour, Palestinian gunmen opened fire at the Jewish neighbourhood of Gilo, prompting Israeli tanks to begin rolling into Palestinian territory.
Israeli forces have taken control of hills and houses in Beit Jalla.
Tanks have also moved into Bethlehem from two directions, seizing three hotels and posting snipers on the rooftops, say witnesses.
Six Palestinians and one Israeli were killed yesterday in a day of violence.
It came a day after the assassination of Israeli Cabinet minister Rehavam Zeevi, by militants from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.
