Boeing contemplates on-board cctv cameras

Planemaking giant Boeing is setting up a special group to enhance aircraft safety and security following the events of September 11, it was announced today.

The new organisation will look at such matters as prevention of cockpit intrusion, and closed-circuit cameras so pilots can keep a watch on the passenger cabin.

Terrorists switched off transponders in last month’s American hijacking, preventing the planes from being tracked.

Now Boeing is working at ways of positively tracking aircraft without the transponders.

Nearly all major carriers’ fleets feature Boeing planes, which include the Boeing 737, 747, 757, 767 and 777.

Alan Mulally, Boeing commercial airplanes president, said: ‘‘Recent events prove there is a place for new technology and quick action that lead to a more secure air transport system.

‘‘The experts in this industry are working hard to bring that technology to bear. We will sharpen that effort, which will give passengers the confidence they expect when flying.’’

The Boeing group will be led by Charlie Higgins, a former Boeing safety chief.

He said: ‘‘True security can be accomplished only by addressing all aspects of air travel.

‘‘The team is working toward a wider range of improvements that will create a more secure and efficient air transport system for the 21st century.’’

Meanwhile, Boeing’s big European rival - Airbus - has issued detailed design plans for cockpit door modification and the necessary data and information have been made available free of charge to Airbus operators.

Like Boeing, Airbus has set up a security task force. Security enhancements being discussed with airlines include improved means of communication between cockpit and cabin and between the aircraft and the ground.
