Australia’s government said today it will fly about 230 asylum seekers to a remote island in Papua New Guinea later this week, where they will stay while their applications for refugee status are processed.

Australia’s government said today it will fly about 230 asylum seekers to a remote island in Papua New Guinea later this week, where they will stay while their applications for refugee status are processed.

A spokesman for immigration minister Philip Ruddock said the mostly Iraqi asylum seekers would be flown from the Australian territory of Christmas Island direct to Manus Island, about 217 miles north of Papua New Guinea’s mainland.
